What is a Students Union?
A students’ union is an organisation dedicated to the educational, welfare, social and organizational activities of the student body. This includes;
• Challenging the University to ensure that students get value for money from their education.
• Ensuring that students’ voices are heard at all levels of University democracy.
• Run campaigns to raise the awareness of health and wellbeing issues facing students.
• Offer free, impartial advice and support on a vast range of issues.
• Run commercial services on campus for students such as bars and shops. These commercial services turn as small a surplus as possible to assist free services but ensure students get the lowest rate possible.
• Represents students locally and nationally on a variety of issues.
• Run welfare services such as advice centres.
• Run entertainments across campus and often externally for students, in order to encourage social activity.
Most students Unions are run by students for students, in the sense that students can get involved in its management through the student general meeting (SGM).
Students can also stand for election as unpaid, part-time executive officers, or as full time, paid sabbatical officers.
What is Swansea University Students’ Union
Swansea University Students’ Union offers a wide variety of services to students at Swansea, some of which are free and some which turn a small profit.
It is highly important to us—and we consistently attempt to convey to our members that the Union is Student Run, Student Led—with all profits to students.
Our services are constantly under review, primarily as to how to make them better but also whether they are still required and if our members want something different.
We regularly promote our motto; “Your Union, Your Experience”
It is of the utmost importance to us that our members are involved and active. We have numerous opportunities for people to “Stand up and Speak out” from our Student General Meetings to our Course Reps Assemblies.
As a student led and student run organisation we aim to ensure that our members views are represented and acted upon. There are of course ways we can improve and with active, passionate students our Union can continue to work alongside the University and ensure that Swansea students get the best student experience they can.
