Why vote?

That age old question crops up once again, probably followed by the answer of “who cares?”

As you scan the internet for reasons, everything from “your moral duty” to “a justification to grumble” faces you. But many of these are reasons for voting in local and national government elections, so surely we need more justification in an Executive election?

Well, perhaps not…

Each person elected to one of the prestigious six offices here at Swansea will be your representative for the next year. Along with this they will be a trustee over a turnover of nearly 4 million pounds. Voting is your chance to ensure that your Union continues to go forward supporting and representing students both here in Swansea and nationwide.

Many people feel that their vote pales into obscurity in many elections. With hundreds of thousands of people voting it doesn’t make any difference if I vote or not.

Well here at the Union it’s one student one vote – so every single one counts!  Can one vote really make all the difference?
Last year an officer was elected with just 3 votes over their next closest candidate. But in every category with only 12,000 students able to vote the margin is never vast.

Still not convinced?

What part of the Union means the most to you here at Swansea? Perhaps you have gained support from the advice centre in difficult times? Or maybe your society was given a grant to take your members on a trip?

Perhaps you regularly shop in niche, work in the computer lab or drink in JC’s?

All of this is YOUR Union and in voting your ensuring that YOUR officers nurture it, encourage it and protect it. Your vote ensures your Union continues to serve, support and represent you!

So get out and vote!
