James Houston (Accommodation Officer 07/08)
I ran for the position of Accommodation Officer because i had a pretty naff experience of life in student housing, but i was passionate about trying to change that through working for the Students Union. I was passionate, and still am about continuing to help students get the most out of their time here at Swansea. I ran a number of campaigns highlighting that your life in student housing doesnt have to be rubbish, your a tenant and you have rights - i took it upon myself to stand up and speak up for my fellow students.
Being on the exec was an AMAZING experience - i grew in myself and my confidence but most importantly i realised how much power the Union has when students work together and challenge the status quo.
If your passionate about student life, passionate about standing up for what you believe in then dont just sit there! Get Involved!!!
Lleu Williams (Welsh Affairs Officer 07/08)
I was elected Welsh Affairs Officer in the summer of 2007, and if I am honest, I didn’t intend on doing so before I came to university. My experience of the students union was no different to that of any other student- I went to the events, I drank in the bar and I used the Advice Centre a couple of times due to a dodgy landlord! I then became involved in the Union itself by working there and becoming active in societies, and with my passion for the Welsh language I decided to run to become an Exec officer!!
If you think you’re not prepared, don’t worry- as long as you’re passionate that’s the most important thing! You get all the training and support you need, and the buzz from representing and making a difference to your fellow students is second to none! Not only this, its great experience and looks good on your CV! If I could have my time again as an Exec Officer at Swansea, I would in a flash!
Think you've got it? Then stand and change Swansea!
